Loving Memory of Dorothy Bernd

07/13/39 – 07/29/21

On July 29th, Dorothy (Dot) Bernd left this world to be reunited with her husband Bill Bernd and her sons Chuck and Ronny Bernd.

Dorothy was born in Riverside, NJ and graduated from Riverside High School where she met the love of her life, Bill Bernd. Soon after high school, Dorothy and Bill were married and their great love story began. Bill joined the service shortly after they were married, but he never forgot to write her a weekly love letter. They had three sons William, Jr., Charles, and Ronald whom they raised on Progress St. in Riverside.

Some of their greatest memories were made at their shore house in Seaside Park, which they affectionately coined the “Sugar Shack.” At the shore, Dot and Bill spent their time crabbing, fishing, walking the boards, sitting outside with their neighbors, and hosting the many family members who came to visit. They also loved to take trips to Florida in their motor home.

Dot was the type of person who liked to have fun, socialize, and make people laugh wherever she went. She loved to sing, dance, and cook her spaghetti and meatballs – sometimes all at the same time. She loved diners, lighthouses, the beach, her dogs, shopping, and talking on the phone with her many friends and family members. You could always count on her to lend an ear and share a laugh.

Dot is survived by her son William (Bill) Bernd, Jr.; granddaughters Julia Bernd and Jillian Bernd (Mike); her brothers Steve and Donnie DeSanto; her sisters Charlotte Tomasczewski, Mary Lou Simes, and Shirley DeSanto; many cousins, nieces, nephews, amazing friends, and her beloved dog Whiskey.

She will be greatly missed. May she rest in peace.

A graveside service will be held on August 18, 11:00 am  at St Peter’s Cemetery, Riverside NJ.

If you would like to send flowers to be placed on the grave at the burial service, please send to Sweeney Funeral Home, 337 Bridgeboro Street, Riverside NJ by August 17th. Thank you and be well.
