Mary Johnston

She always said that her crowning achievement in life was raising great children. If Mary instilled one thing in them it was definitely reading. She was a librarian who led by example. She devoured everything she could lay her hands on and brought back books on a weekly basis for her kids. She stressed to the kids, from an early age, the need for education and not to limit their dreams. While never claiming to be a feminist, this was especially true for her daughters. Mary continually stayed informed, especially when it came to politics and current affairs, and never shied away from a discussion/ debate. She had some lifelong friendships (especially her “Club”) dating back to her grade school years. Mary’s cross stitching was pure artistry, they took months to complete and looked like paintings.
Anyway …. A young Mary Valente would meet a dashing young man at a Riverside firehouse social. She knew he was a quality guy: Joe was already friendly with her parents. Their marriage was blessed with 4 children: Joseph (Dolores), Mary Kay Tomlinson (Kevin), Catherine Cubberly and Michael (Stella); 9 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Mary was the sister of 3: Patricia Brant, the late Daniel Valente and Nicholas Valente.

Come celebrate 82 great years Wednesday 11-noon at Sweeney Funeral Home, Riverside where there will be a noon service. Interment St. Peter’s Cemetery, Riverside.
