Clara Elizabeth Hunter

Clara Elizabeth Hunter (nee Carruthers) passed away quietly at 7:30 AM, March 27, at Marcella Center nursing home in Westampton. She is survived by her four children, Larry Hunter (Carol), Peggy Danley (Robert), Donna Moss (John) and Debbie Yansak (Phil); seven grandchildren, Andy, Susan, Doug, Kim, Brad, Carly and Brian and five great grandchildren, Jackson, Emily, Mina, Poppy and Ryan.rnShe was one of seven children, three boys and four girls and was raised in Riverside by her paternal grandmother, (also Clara). Her sisters, Ethyl Liczbinski and Virginia Pippin survive and live in Riverside and Delanco respectively. rnClara was an excellent student skipping several grades in grammar school and graduating from Riverside High School near the top of her class. She met and married Roy Hunter, a singer, and one of the stars of local radio’s Uncle WIP Show. She was an accomplished dancer as was Roy and they danced just about every Saturday night at one of the local clubs where Roy could always be counted on to sing a couple of songs with the band. The two of them could glide across the floor effortlessly whether doing the Lindy, Jitterbug or a Fox Trot. Even when Roy’s singing career came to an end the couple continued to dance and in their sixties, after retiring to Florida, won a dance contest and a fresh $100 bill at their community’s annual ball. rnSome of the best times of her life were spent at the kitchen table, playing pinochle or penny ante poker with her sisters, brothers and their spouses, laughing, drinking highballs and joking. In Florida the highballs were gone and visiting grandchildren became the favored card partners. rnOver the years she developed into an accomplished cook with an eclectic range that would befit an Iron Chef. Some of her specialties included Chicken Cacciatore, the best ever Macaroni and Cheese, Broiled Rock Shrimp, Crab Cakes, Clams Casino, Mayonnaise Cake, Chocolate Pie, Pizzelles and many more. In addition to cooking skills she will be lovingly remembered by her children for her dry, sarcastic sense of humor which appears to have been genetic , showing up in her children and grandchildren.rnClara’s 92 wonderful years were celebrated privately.
