With a little duck tape and a hammer Tom could fix just about anything including cars at Little Al’s, the fleet at Walt’s Bus service, half of Bridgeport Raceway, his boat, anything his kids were driving and even Tammy Wynette’s tour bus. Everyone at the Woolwich Fire Company knew that Tom’s truck was the tanker. As chief engineer he maintained and manned it for years. His favorite past time was his boat (Nightmare), taking it down the creek to the Delaware for a quick spin and bringing it home. He was a survivor: he shook off polio as a kid, a hit and run accident and a tornado that struck Walt’s Bus service. The building even collapsed on him. He and his wife competitively roller-skated all around South Jersey. Christmas was his favorite time of year: he’d get spoiled with sweets by his wife, the bus ladies and office staff.rnrnAt age 8 Sandy Mathews told him that they’d be married. Not only was she right, but they’d also be best friends. Their 48 year marriage was blessed by 3 children: Tammy (Michael) Coco, Tom Jr., and Mark (Rose), 5 grandchildren, Mikie, Will “B“, Kristen, Danielle, Maykayla and great granddaughter, Gracelyn. They all had a special name for him. Also survived by his brother, Robert “Rube” and his sister, Viola Yeager.rnrnCome celebrate 73 mechanically inclined years Wednesday 7 p.m. at Daley Life Celebration Studio, Swedesboro where there will be a Fire Department service at 7:30 p.m. with storytime to follow.rn –
