Alexander Toner
Alexander “Al” or “Alex” Toner, beloved son, brother, cousin, and friend, passed from this life suddenly on Saturday, April 29, 2023. He was 54 years of age.
Al was born in Willingboro, NJ, the youngest child of eight born to the late Marie E. Toner and Constantine C. Toner, of Edgewater Park, NJ. He attended St. Joseph’s Elementary School in Beverly, Ridgway Middle School in Edgewater Park, Holy Cross High School in Delran, and was a graduate of Burlington City High School.
As a child and young man, Al was a natural athlete who excelled at baseball and football in Edgewater Park recreation leagues. Al was also a member of the swim team at Trident Swim Club in Edgewater Park. As a freshman and sophomore at Holy Cross High School, Al’s speed and agility earned him a position on varsity special teams under coach Frank Paris. After graduating from Burlington City High School, Al played softball for many years on several Riverfront Men’s League teams.
For most of the 1990s, Al maintained the grounds at Tall Pines (formerly Trident) Swim Club, owned by his older brother, the late Constantine C. Toner III. Al also worked as a mechanic at the former Equipment Supply in Burlington Township and worked as an electrician with his brother, Michael, at Toner Electric. Most recently, Al worked in landscaping.
Al was an avid fan of all Philadelphia sports teams, rooting for the Eagles, Phillies, and Sixers. He also loved Notre Dame football. Al could act out and recite word-by-word the Knute Rockne speech from Notre Dame football lore, and the movie, “Rudy”.
But mostly Al was known for having a great big heart, an engaging smile, a talent for observing and listening closely to others, and a genuine willingness to help any person or animal in need. It always came natural to him to try to “right” what he considered a “wrong”. Once, he was given an award for intercepting a supermarket armed robber. Al was that rare kind of person who was always more interested in learning about others instead of talking about himself. He loved without reserve and gave of himself without hesitation. He will be greatly missed.
Al is survived by his siblings, Lisa Lang (Mike) of Delanco and Ship Bottom; Karen Fuller (Shawn) of Panama City, FL; Noreen (Kenny) Stefano of Moorestown; Pete of Burlington; Michael of Edgewater Park; and Janine (Stephen) Carb of Philadelphia, PA.
He also has many nieces and nephews to cherish his memory including Michael, Stephen, Shawn Michael, Taylor, Nicholas, Liz, Peter, Nikki, Lauren, Melissa, Janine, Kaitlyn, Josh, Jenifer, Joe, and Hazel.
Al was preceded in death by his beloved parents, brother Constantine C. Toner III, and his late sister-in-law’s, Jeralyn “Jerri” Brett Toner (Pete) and Melanie Reiter (Michael).
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his viewing on Friday, May 12, 2023, from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. and Saturday from 8:30 – 9:30 A.M. at the Sweeney Funeral Home, 478 Cooper Street, Beverly, NJ, 08010. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:45 A.M. on Saturday, May 13, at Jesus, The Good Shepherd Church, 805 Warren Street, Beverly, NJ, 08010. Interment will be private.
