Eileen S. Rider

Eileen S. Rider

Eileen S. Rider (nee Scanlan) age 81 of Riverside, NJ passed away on September 29, 2023. Born in Atlantic City, NJ.  She was the daughter of the late M. Ward Scanlan and Eileen (McSherry) Scanlan.  She is also predeceased by her two sons: Ward and Peter and her sister: Suzy Crowell. She was the loving mother to Ann (William George), John, and Eileen. She was “Granny” to Michael, Joey and Alyssa and “Gigi” to George and Alessia. Eileen is also survived by her loving sister, Kathie Deighan, nephew Dean (Cathy) Crowell and great nephew’s Ben and Colin.

Eileen was a woman who had many passions and interests. She had an incredible green thumb and found joy in tending to her house plants and garden.  Her love for nature extended to her love for animals.  She had many pets over the years whom she loved dearly and would do anything for. Eileen was also known for her talents in the kitchen making homemade fudge, various slaws, and deviled eggs.  Eileen loved playing the lottery.  She religiously played her numbers daily and for many, many years, hoping to “hit the jackpot.”  She had an extensive list of all the people she would give money to if she ever did “hit it big”. Eileen was an avid reader and had a particular fondness for Stephen King novels, devouring them in no time at all.  She was also a good pool player, which she learned how to play at Vince’s East End/Derby’s Tavern, her place of employment as a bartender for 37 years.  It was at her job as a bartender that she came to be so well loved and respected by all those who knew her.  She will be greatly missed by many.

Come celebrate 81 years on Friday from 11am – 1 pm at Sweeney’s Funeral Home, 337 Bridgeboro Street, Riverside, NJ 08075.  A funeral home service will be held at 1 pm.  Interment St. Peter’s Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers donations may be made to ASPCA.
