Dimitrios Megariotis
Born in Andros, Greece, ninety-eight-year-old Dimitrios Megariotis passed away peacefully on March 5, 2023. Dimitrios measured success in life by the love and joy of his family. He was married to Athena (Sacalis), the love of his life, for sixty years. Dimitrios was a kind and dedicated family man who attended every sporting event of his three sons, John, Alex, and Nick, even though he only had one day off each week. An expert craftsman at woodworking, he worked his way to America as a ship’s carpenter. His culinary expertise led him to open a restaurant, and then later work as Chef for The Village Inn with his brother, Nick. Dimitrios became an American citizen in 2002. In retirement, Dimitrios and Athena sold his wood creations at craft shows around New Jersey and they were always so charming with customers and friends, alike. He made beautiful inlaid boxes, humidors, ornaments, and pepper mills. His attention to the finest details made it easy to see that he took pride in his work. He spent his lifetime making sure that his family had everything they needed, giving freely of his time, love, and care. He was so happy to become a grandfather, and then a great grandfather, but really, he was simply a great man, and a hero and role model to his sons, grandsons, and great grandchildren to whom he gave so much of his love and attention.
Dimitrios’ legacy lives on as he is survived by his three sons, John and his wife Laureen, Alexander (Wendy), and Nicholas and his wife Elaine, along with their two sons, James and his wife Stephanie and their children Nicholas and Penelope, and Joseph and his fiancé Katelin Cantagallo. He is also survived by his sister, Katina, in Greece, who is one hundred three years old, and many loving nieces, nephews, and godchildren. Dimitrios is pre-deceased by his beloved wife, Athena, and his mother and father, John and Francis (Diakakis), along with his brothers Nick and Gregory, and sisters Marietta and Anna. He is the last of his generation for the Megariotis family in America and he will be remembered in our hearts, in our family, and in the lives of all those he touched, either by the food he prepared or the things they now use every day, which were made by his hands.
The viewing for Dimitrios Megariotis will be held on Thursday, March 9, 2023, from 9:00-11:00 am at Sweeney Funeral Home in Riverside. Funeral services will commence at noon
at St. Thomas Greek Orthodox Church in Cherry Hill, followed by his burial at Lakeview Memorial Park in Cinnaminson. In lieu of flowers, a donation made with love and gratitude to Samaritan Hospice, 3906 Church Rd, Mt. Laurel NJ 08054 will be greatly appreciated.
