CURRENT CELEBRATIONS
John M Dougherty Sr.
When John was a young man he proudly served in the Marine Corps. After serving, John returned and transitioned into a career in law enforcement, embodying the virtues of courage and duty as a police officer. John was a man of ceaseless energy. He was unable to ever sit still, he was always up to something new. John found a new purpose working for the school district of Philadelphia. Starting as a school bus driver, he steadily ascended the ranks to become a respected supervisor, overseeing transportation operations in the Northeast Division.
In his leisure time, John could be found watching Gunsmoke, his favorite show. He enjoyed spending time with his friends, playing board games, and was pretty good at bridge. He also enjoyed hosting barbeques and dinner parties. He was a proud member of the American Legion and at one point served as the Chaplain. John was devoted to his church, attending every Sunday and always extending a helping hand to them when needed.
Summers were also the best time for his fishing trips and gardening. He had a 16X16 garden that fed the whole family. He grew the BEST tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers even when he was in his late 70s.
John was a pillar of his household, embodying the values of responsibility and compassion. A devoted husband to Roslyn, he exemplified selflessness in every aspect of his life. Whether it was maintaining their home with meticulous care or embracing his role as a stepfather and grandfather with unwavering love, John’s presence brought warmth and comfort to all who knew him.
John met the love of his life Roslyn by being introduced by their neighbor who lived on their street. They lived only a couple of houses down from each other, and their short friendship blossomed into a 22 year marriage. Together, they explored the world, from traveling by train across Canada, extensive cruises and driving across the country three times. Even in the quiet moments, their bond remained unbreakable, illuminated by shared laughter and a gentle hand squeeze to say goodnight.
John is survived by his wife: Roslyn, stepchildren: Steven Garner (Yuliana), Jeffrey Garner, Mark Tiounoff (Julie), and Soni Tiounoff; grandchildren: Jack Dougherty III, Allison Rindone, Benjamin Tiounoff, Daniel Tiounoff, and Nathan Garner. He was survived 4 great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by his son Jack Dougherty and his stepson Norman Gardener.
