Joseph F. Garbe Jr.

Joseph F. Garbe Jr. of Smyrna DE, formerly of Hainesport NJ, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 8, 2024, at the age of 74. Joe was born on March 30th, 1950 to Gloria and Joseph Garbe Sr. Joe grew up in Riverside, NJ and graduated from Holy Cross High School with the class of 1968.

As a young man Joe loved going to Garden State Park and “donating to the horses”. The White Eagle Tavern was one of his favorite meeting places with friends. He was a baseball umpire for many years; a role he really enjoyed. His love of sports included the Phillies and the Eagles and carved into his family life as he coached pop warner football when his sons were young. He could also be found on the golf course with an early tee time or participating in bowling leagues.

In January of 1979 Joe met Susan Wilkins at the E&R bar. They married that fall on October 20,1979. Joe and Sue celebrated over 44 years of marriage and raised three children. Joe had a successful career in sales, where his charismatic personality and hearty laugh helped him close many a deal.

Joe is preceded in death by his father Joseph Garbe, his mother Gloria Garbe, and his sister Maryanne Lamancusa.

He is survived by his wife Susan Garbe, his daughter Kimberly, and his sons Jeffery and Joseph. Joe delighted in being a grandfather and was a beloved “Poppy” to Olivia, John, Jacob, Joey, Lincoln, and Emily. Joe will be fondly remembered by nephews Mike and Jim and nieces Nicole and Erica. Joe also leaves behind his brother Jim (Weasel) with whom he spent a lot of time in his later years in their Delaware Homes. Joe will be missed by many cousins and dear friends who often referred to him as “Sack”.

Come celebrate 74 great years on Friday, September 13th, from 8am-9:45am at Sweeney Funeral Home,337 Bridgeboro Street, Riverside. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10am at Resurrection Parish. (St. Casimir site). Interment private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Judes which was Joe’s favorite charity to which he donated each year.
