Virginia “Ginger” Weston

Virginia “Ginger” Weston

Ginger, as she was known to all her family and friends, was a kindhearted individual who loved her family and friends and cherished her cats. She was also a dedicated employee with a strong work ethic. She worked at St. George’s parochial school in Port Richmond, Phila. as the school librarian, while her daughters attended there in their grade school years, and then went on to work at Jeanes Hospital for many years in the critical care unit as an EKG tech until her retirement.
Ginger’s favorite holiday was Halloween. She would take a week off from work to decorate her Bridesburg row home and on Oct. 31 found her decked out as a witch. She started dressing as a witch back in the 70’s and was one of the first “haunted houses” in Philadelphia. People came from all over to see the scary witch’s house, complete with a scary musical soundtrack. She always dressed as the Wicked Witch and if her costume didn’t scare people, her witch cackle would, but she made sure all the kids left with a smile and plenty of candy. Her favorite meal of the day was breakfast and she really loved salmon. She frequently went to Chickie and Pete’s in NE Philly and to Tony’s Place in Mayfair with her mother; you could often find them there on weekends at either place enjoying crabs or pizza and beer. She enjoyed making her own spaghetti sauce, she loved classic rock (Peter Gabriel, Pink Floyd) and classical music and had been to many concerts. If her T.V. was on she’d be checking out the Hallmark Channel and Law and Order, but she preferred to read horror and gothic novels. She grew up loving horror comic books as a child and carried the love for horror movies and books. She loved to watch Dr. Shock, she enjoyed James Bond movies, mainly the ones starring Sean Connery, and her favorite all time scary movie was “Halloween”. She loved sitting on the beach, especially in the evenings and she loved cats as well as all animals. She was strong in her Catholic faith and enjoyed red wine. She was very proud of her daughters, and she loved her grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughters, Regina (John) Lento, Rosemarie (Frank) D’Ascanio and Suzanne (Karl) Schuster; her grandchildren, Colin, Erin, Domenico and Antonio; great grandchildren, Colin Jr. and Brody; and her sisters, Eileen Brown and Kathryn Villano, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Come celebrate 84 great years Saturday July 20, 10 to 11 a.m. at Sweeney Funeral Home, 478 Cooper Street, Beverly where there will be an 11 a.m. service. Interment private at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, donations to be made to any cat or animal shelter and in honor of Ginger’s memory, we would like you to perform an act of kindness with her in mind.
