Francis Lawrence Newman of Delanco, born Jan. 17, 1923, departed this life Saturday, Nov. 14, 2015.
He was the first born of the late Albert Hausman Newman and Marie Alberta Mercur Haley. He was born and raised in West Chester, Pa., and was a graduate of St. Agnes High School, and an enthusiastic member West Chester Bird Club.
As a technical sergeant during World War II, Francis was involved in the European and Asian theatres of that war, most notably Salerno, Italy, Normandy, France, and Okinawa, Japan. He was awarded three Bronze Stars.
He returned to West Chester University to obtain his bachelor’s degree. He received his master’s degree from Temple University.
Francis was a dedicated educator in Pemberton, Burlington City, and Burlington Township high schools for more than 39 years. He also was an adjunct professor at Trenton State College and Rutgers University. In 1968, he was named Princeton University Teacher of the Year. He also was a former president of the New Jersey Science Teachers Association.
Francis was the beloved husband of Catherine Cranmer for more than 64 years; the devoted father of Richard (Darcy) of South Burlington, Vt., Robert of Delanco, David of Pawtuckett, R.I., and Paul (Krisanne) of Delanco. He was the loving grandfather of Jeffrey, Alyssa, Paul, Haley, Carley, Olivia, and Casey.
He was preceded in death by five siblings, Margaret, Richard, Agnes, Marie, and Rosemary. He also is survived and loved by Albert H. Newman Jr., and Elizabeth Moran of West Chester, Pa.
He was a member of Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church, Willingboro.
Come celebrate 92 great years from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, and from 8 to 9 a.m. Wednesday, at Sweeney Funeral Home, Riverside. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, at Corpus Christi Church, Willingboro. Interment will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Burlington.
