Nancy Hutnick of Evesham, NJ passed away peacefully after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease on Tuesday, July 28, 2026.
She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Charles “Chick”; her sons David (Lindsay) and Bradley (Jennifer); her grandchildren Luke, Alison, Cecilia, and Natalie; her sister Jane (Lew) Furman; her brother James (Cathy) Maratea; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Nancy was born on December 23, 1950, in Riverside, NJ, to Domenic and Martha (Maloney) Maratea. She attended St. Peter’s Elementary School in Riverside, Riverside High School, and earned her bachelor’s degree in early childhood education from Glassboro State College.
After college, Nancy taught at St. Charles Borromeo School in Cinnaminson for a few years before becoming a stay-at-home mom. Once her kids had gotten settled in school, she returned to teaching. She was instrumental in starting and developing the Pre-K 3 and 4 programs at St. Casimir’s School in Riverside, where she taught for 14 years. She also taught at Corpus Christi School in Willingboro for two years. Teaching and helping young children was as near to her heart as her family was. Nancy was loved by her students, and she loved each of them like her own children. As a mother and an educator, Nancy also supported her sons’ educations through her multiple roles with the PTA at St. Peter’s School, proudly serving as a general member, Treasurer, Vice-President, and President for many years. After her teaching career, Nancy served as the business manager at St. Peter’s Parish in Riverside for more than five years until her retirement.
On her 18th birthday, Nancy met Chick at her birthday party at her cousin’s house. They became constant companions, and after a brief (10 year) dating period, Chick finally realized that they were meant to be together forever. They were married on July 22, 1978.
Nancy was a devoted Catholic, for whom missing mass was not an option. She was a life-long member of St. Peter’s Parish, later Jesus, the Good Shepherd Parish, in Riverside, and was heavily involved in many parish events for many years. She shared her faith with her family, prioritizing Catholic education for her sons, and encouraging them and her grandchildren to be active and engaged with their religion and church community. Nancy took God’s command to love her neighbor as herself to heart and constantly lived her faith through service to others. Through the church and on her own, she spent countless hours volunteering her time and regularly donated goods and money to help anyone who needed it, in any way she could.
Nancy was an active and caring grandmother; her grandchildren were a source of enormous joy and pride for her. As with many things in her life, she took any opportunity she could to help, whether it was planning for their arrival or lovingly helping with the task of raising them once they were born. She treasured the time she spent with her grandkids, who will always benefit from the patience, love, and care she gave them.
Nancy lived nearly all of her life in Riverside, forging and sustaining many deep connections and relationships over the years, especially through the schools and churches she associated with. Nancy was blessed and grateful to have numerous meaningful friendships dating back to her childhood. She shared a deep and unique bond with her dearest friend Maria since they were three years old. They were ever-present figures in each other’s lives for more than 70 years, more like family than friends, and claimed to have never had a single fight. Nancy also enormously valued her close, life-long relationships with her friends Michele and Donna. They and many others were an enormous help and support throughout her battle with Alzheimer’s.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Nancy’s visitation on Friday, August 21, 2026, from 10 to 11:30AM with the Mass of Christian Burial to follow immediately at Jesus the Good Shepherd Parish Church, 805 Warren St. Beverly, NJ 08010.
